Hybrid Sports Car:Do they really exist? Everybody likes to have a car that goes fast. It’s a fact.
Even people who campaign for lower emissions and drive around in a prius dream for a day when they can keep up with any boy racer and still keep +60mpg.
Well this day is getting closer as more and more manufacturers are putting in plans for a hybrid sports car to rival any petrol car out there. BMW, Ferrari, and Porsche all have plans for super fast hybrid sports cars with a huge mpg. BMWs efficient dynamics Vision hybrid is scheduled to be out in 2013. BMW say it will get from 0-60mph in 4.8s and still manage 63mpg. It’s going to be a diesel electric hybrid too instead of the usual petrol electric hybrid. The Ferrari 599 HY-KERS is a hybrid unveiled by Ferrari at the 2010 Geneva motor show.
I don’t think there’s a man or woman out there who wouldn’t jump at the chance of driving this hybrid!
It’s only a concept but Ferrari claim the motor is rated at 100hp and will be used when accelerating and overtaking.
It can even solely by electricity for city driving.
There’s no mpg rating but they day it will cut CO2 emissions by 35% compared to the original 599.
Porsche have two electric hybrid cars in the works also.
The first is a hybrid version of the 918 which Porsche has claimed will have an amazing 78mpg.
It’s a plug-in hybrid with a 500hp engine and two motors which add an extra 250hp.
It can drive up to 16 miles purely on electricity in E Drive mode as well.
The 918 hybrid is a concept car but Porsche say that if they get 1,000 people interested in buying one then they would definitely put it into production as it’s a car they would love to make.
The second Porsche is the GT3 R hybrid which will be participating in the 24hr Nürburgring race.
The hybrid system will be used for overtaking and conserving fuel which is extremely important for an endurance race.
It uses energy from braking and stores it to use it for an extra boost of power.
The Honda CR-Z is already on sale in Japan and although billed to provide 59mpg originally it is now shown to only provide around 35mpg.
It has a 1.5l engine and a combined 122hp.
It’s scheduled to be on sale in Europe and the USA this summer (2010).
It’s not really anywhere on par with the other hybrid sports cars here but it’s the only one out now even if it is just Japan!
The Fisker Karma is a plug-in hybrid sports car which was due to be out a few years ago but keeps getting pushed back all the time which seems to be a huge problem with hybrid and electric cars. It’s supposed to be going into production this year however after they secured a huge loan from the US government. If it does come out it will be very hard to resist with 0-60mph in less than 6 seconds and a top speed of 125mph. The Fisker can also go 50 miles on electricity alone. Well that’s all that’s out there at the moment but hopefully hybrid technology will be incorporated in much more sports cars in the future.
Even a small bit of hybrid technology can help a racing car enormously and it can only improve.
The days of thinking hybrids are all as boring as the Prius are over!
