Ford Fusion Hybrid

A hybrid car that likes to be average

The Ford Fusion hybrid is an American car that kind of looks like a version of the Mondeo.

It’s one of the many average family cars that sold well enough in America so that it now has a hybrid version.

To cut right to the chase it gets a respectable but not jaw dropping 41mpg US (5.7l/100km or 49mpg Imp.) in the city and 36mpg US (6.5l/100km or 43mpg Imp.) on the highway.

The basic cost for a Ford Fusion hybrid is $28,100. Which is a nice bit of change but still is not outrageously expensive for a hybrid.

What it runs on is a 2.5l Atkinson cycle I-4 Hybrid engine. The Atkinson cycle is what they use in most hybrids compared to an Otto cycle which is used in most normal petrol engine cars. It is much more efficient but gives slightly less power. However this is compensated by the extra power coming from the motor in a hybrid.

Ford Fusion Hybrid A 2.5l engine is definitely not a small engine that you would get in your usual hybrid but this is the USA and they’re known for having huge engines and not getting much out of them, so it’s probably the smallest they have over there!

The electric motor is a permanent magnet AC synchronous motor and combined with the engine it can produce 191hp or 142kW.

The Ford Fusion hybrid seems to be getting a lot of praise over in the US as in January it won the 2010 North American car of the year, so that does say something, and would have sold a few cars for them too.

There are a growing number of cars out there now that have a hybrid badge but really make so little difference to the efficiency or emmissions. You would almost think that manufacturing and glueing on the hybrid badge to the back of the car probably creates as much emmissions as some of them actually claim to reduce! I think that the Ford Fusion really does earn it's badge but it can do a lot more if it really wants to make a difference and capture peoples attention.

Ford Fusion Hybrid To be honest it’s really not an easy car to get excited about but like most average cars they’re only ever exciting to someone who’s just bought one. I think that’s the point though, as Ford want to make their hybrids and electric cars like the electric Focus in a normal average body.

They think that people don’t want to have a car that stands out and puts them on show for being green like the Aptera 2e for example and I think they might be right.

There are a few cool looking different cars out there and when people see them they think "wow that’s an interesting car!", but when it comes to buying one most people end up going for the average looking one in the end!

Ford Fusion Hybrid That’s where the majority of people are at and that’s going to be where they can sell the most hybrids and make the world a bit greener in, I’ll admit, a slightly dull way but at least they get things done.

So the Ford Fusion hybrid isn’t a car that will revolutionise the car industry but at least pulling together with the rest of the hybrids it will make a difference.
