The Ford Electric Car:Is the Electric Focus going to be the Model T of the Electric car world? Well it looks like Ford is ANOTHER one of the major car manufacturers to have an all-electric car on sale in 2011.
Most major manufacturers seem to have an electric car scheduled for 2010/11/12 by now as they seem to have all realised that if the electric car really is the future then they don’t want their competition to get ahead of them and start taking money that could have been theirs!
It could also be because of the mounting pressure from the public and governments too but I’d say the money reason’s more likely! If you’re from the USA you might have already seen the new Ford Electric Car on the Jay Leno Show where he has a car challenge kind of like Top Gears “star in a reasonably priced car”, except I could see a lot more stars driving the Electric Ford Focus than a Suzuki Liana!Their car is going to be based on the European Focus model (the American Focus is different) and as Ford are the masters of mass marketing in the car world this car seems to be no different. They even standardised their ICE, hybrid and electric cars to be mostly the same so they can mass market them much easier which bodes well for the electric car. Standardising’s not as bad a thing as some electric car fanatics would have you believe though.
The Ford Focus that the electric car is set to be modelled on is an extremely popular car where I’m from in Ireland and all over Europe already.
The “hot hatchback” version is definitely the most popular and I’m glad that’s the car that they’re going to be using as their prototypes when they trial them in London in, hopefully, early 2010. The car they’re going to be releasing in America in 2011 could be different, but it’s most likely to be along the same lines as the European Focus. The Ford Electric Car drivetrain was developed almost entirely by a company called Magna International from Canada, which would have helped really speed up the project for Ford instead of them trying to figure out how to build an electric car from scratch and without a doubt stumbling along the way like most manufacturers! Ford claimed at the Frankfurt motor show this year that the car will have a 120km (75 miles) range and a top speed of 136km/h (85mph).
It has a 100kW permanent magnet DC motor powered by Li-ion batteries and a normal charge should take between 6 – 8 hours. I think that this car from Ford will be a great step forward when it comes out.
They will leapfrog over GM who are making the hybrid Chevy Volt and will show that the American car giant is willing to change its tune by realising it needs to change the type of cars it makes.
I think that it looks like it won’t be an overly expensive car and its specs certainly won’t amaze you but it still is one of the most exciting cars to look out for in the future in my opinion. I only hope that they really make sure they give the electric Ford Focus as much attention as they do to their countless gas guzzlers already on sale.
