Electric Bicycles:Twelve Reasons for NOT Getting an Electric Bike.Reason 1. Electric Bicycles are Too Heavy.Right. Heavy compared to what? A Washing Machine? A Dogs House? No OTHER bicycles of course.
Now lets pull back from this a little. I dont know about you but The big worry that I have is being caught with a dead battery, at the bottom of a hill, miles from home and having to push or pedal a TANK of a bike up that hill. NO THANKS! At the moment, the typical weight of an ordinary (only pedal-power) Mountain Bike around where I live is about 15kg (33lbs) or less.  As you might imagine, if you take that weight and ADD a battery, motor, heavier brakes etc. you will be adding quite a bit of weight but how much?
Well, the first electric bicycles weighed in at about 38KG (84lbs) which you would not find me pushing up a hill! Imagine almost 3 times the weight of a modern mountain bike. And now? Things have changed. One of the better looking e-bikes that I have seen the Kalkhoff Pro-Connect weighs in at about 20 kg (44lbs) 30% over the weight of a Mountain Bike.  It is now predicted that the average weight of an Electric Bike will fall to 14kg (31lbs) within 2 years YEAH! the SAME weight as a mountain bike.
My Conclusion? Although weight isnt everything (how that weight is distributed is just as important) it was one of my first worries when looking at electric bikes. This was probably because I live in such a hilly area. But it seems that most e-bikes are only 1.5 the weight of a typical mountain bike. As long as you get an alloy frame with a light lithium-ion battery. And I think I can handle that! Now, what was the next reason NOT to get a Electric bicycle? Go to Reason Number 2: Electric Bicycles are Too Expensive .
