Electric Motorcycles:Which Electric Powered Motorbike is Best?Dedicated petrolhead bikers may need to look away now!  As part of my search for the right all-electric vehicles for me and my family I'm going to have a look at All-Electric Motorcycles. I realise I'm also looking at electric scooters and mopeds - and maybe I won't find anything that fits the bill of a REAL motorbike alternative in electricland - but there's no harm in looking. I'm prepared to be surprised! So the questions are:
Of course, there are lots of performance, technical and visual differences between motorcycles and scooters/mopeds – but I guess from an Electric Point of View, I think it is really about PERFORMANCE! Can the machine go a good distance e.g. greater than 60 miles on a single charge? Is it capable of holding it’s own – based on acceleration and top speed – on the highway or motorway? I feel that if a Motorbike has two of these characteristics – and has a good Motorbike look about it – then it qualifies as an Electric Motorbike – as opposed to only being a scooter. Oh, and one last thing ... how about being available NOW as opposed to 3 years from NOW!  First off – here’s an example of one that certainly has the eye candy - the Lectra VR24. The thing is, when you look at the specs., it ONLY has a RANGE OF 35 MILES and a top speed of 45MPH!!! See what we’re up against! So that’s one down the hatch. Will we ever find a real Electric Motorbike?? Let’s keep looking.  Here’s another example: The TTX01. Ok let’s have a closer look.

And for now – that’s it! The only 2 production motorbikes that seem to do the business (Vectrix - 0-50mph in 6.8 secs, top speed 62mph, range of 68 miles) (GPRS - 0-50mph in 6.8 secs, top speed 70mph, range of 35-60 miles)and (kind of) look the part. I’ll have to keep an eye on developments – and will keep this page updated – but for now, I think I’ll need to stick with Electric Cars, Electric Scooters and Electric Bicycles in my search for my families perfect Electric Transport!
